When choosing a nozzle size keep in mind that there are limits to what nozzles work with each Air Cap. Increasing or decreasing the nozzle size effects the volume of fluid delivered along with the fluid viscosity.

Most spray grade wood and metal coatings fall into a 28 to 35 seconds on a #2 Zahn Cup. Nozzle sizes commonly used are within the range of .036"(.9mm) to .051" (1.3mm). I prefer the .051" with the #8 or #7 Air Cap. This isn't written in stone for an example I've had a customer use a 1.10"() with 34 sec#2 Zahn wood coating spraying furniture with excellent results. Also you will find the ProKits below do not reflect the same recommendation. We also recommend the .061" or .072" Needle Nozzles with the #9 or #10 Air Caps for Latex Paints.
